A Story About a Hand Up

Sep 2, 2025

I’d like to tell you a story about a hand up. She was a single mom of four who worked a full-time job. She first came to us during the flood of 2011. She was displaced after her home was unlivable but was able to stay with a family member for a season while she looked for a new home.

In February of 2012 after transitioning to a higher paying job at a different employer she was able to find her new home. AGAPE was able to help replace the furniture that was lost in the flood and she was on her way. Through AGAPE’s partnership with SMILE she was able to connect with other single mothers to share struggles and successes. She stayed connected with AGAPE though when Getting Ahead started she attended one of the earlier classes and she absorbed all of the information there was to give. She learned to budget and more importantly she learned about the levels of society that would benefit her later. AGAPE was even able to help her make her rent when she couldn’t make ends meet.

In 2017 she found herself stuck at home temporarily recovering from a medical surgery.  She decided to volunteer with AGAPE and came in every week to help with Fresh Express. Then when she went back to work she found something had changed. She missed volunteering. Her job had also changed from prior to surgery so she looked and found a different job that enabled her to work full-time and volunteer at AGAPE. Her kids were getting older so she was able to work at night and volunteer at AGAPE during the way while they were in school. She started learning all of the ins and outs of how AGAPE ran not just how we served the clients but how we kept the lights on. AGAPE then sent her to training with another partner teaching her how to have long-term financial goals in life while also being able to give back.

In 2018 AGAPE offered this once client a part time job at first so she continued her night time job and then came straight to AGAPE where her heart was. Now as she enters her sixth year as an employee she is able to use all that AGAPE has given her to give back. AGAPE has taught her how to care more, how to manage her own life more, how to serve more and how to lead.  Although she learned Matthew 25: 25-45 as a young child God had taught her since the beginning of AGAPE 15 years ago how to live Matthew 25.

Thank you for giving me this opportunity to serve each and every day.  She is grateful for everything AGAPE HAS taught her so far and she’s excited to see what we learn together in the next 15 years.
