Items like soap, deodorant, socks, underwear, and toothbrushes may seem small, but they can have a significant impact on daily life. When these essentials become difficult to afford, individuals and families are often forced to make impossible choices between purchasing hygiene products or paying for necessities like housing, utilities, and groceries.
At AGAPE, the Bare Necessities Program exists to help bridge that gap by providing basic hygiene products and clothing essentials to neighbors throughout our community.
Small Items Can Become Big Barriers
Many hygiene and personal care products must be purchased regularly, making them an ongoing expense for families living on limited incomes.
A bottle of shampoo, a package of socks, or a new toothbrush may not seem expensive on its own. However, alongside rent, utilities, transportation costs, and groceries, these everyday items can quickly become difficult to afford.
Without access to these essentials, daily routines become more challenging. Something as simple as attending school, going to work, or participating in community activities can feel more difficult when basic hygiene or clean clothing is unavailable.
More Than Health and Hygiene
Access to hygiene products is about more than cleanliness.
Children and teens benefit from having the essentials they need to attend school with confidence and comfort. Adults are better equipped to work, attend appointments, and manage everyday responsibilities when they have access to basic personal care items.
Clean socks, undergarments, bras, undershirts, and hygiene products support health while also helping restore dignity and confidence during difficult seasons of life.
Reaching People Where They Already Are
One of the strengths of the Bare Necessities Program is its ability to meet people where they are.
Rather than relying on a single distribution location, hygiene and clothing kits are provided through local schools, community agencies, and AGAPE’s Fresh Express events. This approach makes it easier for individuals and families to access support in environments where they already feel comfortable and connected.
By partnering with schools and community organizations, AGAPE can reach neighbors who may not otherwise seek assistance while helping ensure these essential items are available throughout the region.
Supporting Neighbors Across Five Counties
The Bare Necessities Program serves men, women, and youth experiencing financial hardship, homelessness, or crisis throughout our five-county Susquehanna Valley region.
Every person’s circumstances are different. Some may be recovering from an unexpected financial setback. Others may be rebuilding after a personal crisis or experiencing housing instability. Regardless of the situation, access to basic hygiene and clothing items helps remove barriers that can make moving forward more difficult.
The program is designed to provide practical support while recognizing the dignity and worth of every individual who walks through AGAPE’s doors or connects through one of our community partners.
How You Can Help
The Bare Necessities Program is made possible through the generosity of our community.
Donations of new hygiene products, socks, undergarments, bras, undershirts, and other personal care items help keep the program stocked throughout the year. Community members can also support the program by hosting donation drives, volunteering, or helping spread awareness about the ongoing need for these everyday essentials.
Every donation, no matter the size, helps ensure that neighbors across our community have access to the basic items many of us use every day without a second thought. Together, those small acts of generosity can make a meaningful difference in someone’s health, confidence, and daily life.
“Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
